You can help support them by dropping off clothing, furniture, toys etc at the council by Friday May 18th

the money earned will help them pay for an annual camping retreat they take in the summer, getting them ready for a week up at camp wintaka!!

next monday December 19 is our christmas meeting at delaney's house from 6:00pm to 7:30p,6726 parapet, 90808 (562) 425-0288 susie.

please bring an appetizer or a dessert to share

we will have a HANDMADE gift exchange again this year. Ideas are: bake something like cookies, fudge, brownies etc. Put treats in a jar and decorate it. Paint something you pick up at joanne or michaels (custom make it with camp fire symbols and words). Decorate a photo box to hold camp fire patches and supplies. Put together a "kit" to make scrapbook pages for a photo book. Decorate the cover of a photo book that can be used to put photos in. Make friendship bracelets or put together a kit to make them. You can always check out Pinterest for more ideas (i will post a link and look up under diy and craft section). Hope that helps!! Keep it simple and inexpensive please. thanks!

our "farm" at camp fire

please stop by and check out our new garden plot at camp fire, we spent some time pulling weeds, amending the soil and planting a winter garden on sunday. if you are a "service project" officer you need to stop by at least once a week and water. right now the veggies are very fragile and need lots of light watering. please be careful not to smash the plants, use a light spray to water until they get larger and more hardy. we planted sugar snap peas, onion bulbs, cabbage, rosemary and i came back later to plant some carrot, beet and chard seeds. i also stuck in a few squash seeds to see if we can get some squash as well. thanks ivy and sophia who came out and helped, there will be plenty of opportunity for everyone to help out. we will begin working on the larger area inside the gate that runs along the building (the part next to our plot that continues inside the gate) soon. so be ready for some more weed pulling!! the highlight for me was seeing all the lizards come out to eat the bugs we stirred up by weeding. very interesting!!

ok!!

so i really enjoyed our last meeting and i am happy to say i spent about 3 hours today learning about the discovery program at a leader training (thats the new level our 6th graders are at) and i have some ideas how to incorporate our adventure kids into meetings as well for this year.

a few things: discovery level is designed with the middle schooler in mind so many of the lessons are more about planning, organizing and then executing a lesson on a deeper level than we have done in the past. kids will be expected to play more of a leader role when planning a meeting (being a leader for an activity is one of the requirements for their end of year emblem for discovery). our meetings will be from 6pm to 7:15 or 7:30 giving us more time to finish up one or two lesson plans and make sure we can do something creative as well.

it is REALLY important that the girls bring their workbook to every meeting, we will be working on specific pages in the book at each meeting. also, we will continue to have officers (president, vp, etc) and make sure everyone gets a chance to run the business part of our meetings. for the next three months, we have pumpkin carving, carnival, thanksgiving holiday meeting, christmas party, belmont shore parade and stuff like that so our curriculum will really kick in around january and february and continue to june.

last, we will focus on indian themes for our collars and learn to use the bead loom to make headbands, bracelets and other items to decorate our future gowns. the adventure kids will be able to participate in this in january because we have planned a meeting to coincide with their collar making workshop. i think this will be really fun for all the girls and will unite us all with decorated collars for grand council fire.

i will work on our calendar and assign each girl to a lesson they pick (just like before, they give me their first, second and third choice) and the date they will present the lesson. most likely we will have 2 lessons at a meeting because they should be approx 40 minutes each. this being our first year in discovery, we will do our best and learn as we go!! again, these kid run meetings will kick in around jan/feb of next year so don't panic. :)

our service project for the eastside neighborhood will continue to be our los cerritos wetlands adventure. for kiniya i have a NEW idea!! Camp fire is interested in putting in vegetables that can be harvested and donated to the long beach food bank. our group can "adopt" a patch of land at the council and "farm it"!! i am thinking a spring salsa garden would be perfect and have the girls get the plot ready, plant it and then harvest the veggies. let me know what you think about this idea. i am going to "adopt" our patch asap so we can work on it in the near future together if everyone likes it. of course i will ask the girls but i want parental support as well.

our eastside potluck is next week Thursday Oct 6 from 6 to 8pm at the camp fire council lodge. i am personally in charge of some of the activities so i will be there at 5:30 if anyone wants to come early.

grand council fire was lots of fun this year, a longer than usual ceremony but exciting as well. it was very inspiring to hear about all the wo he lo medallion recipients and to feel all the good emotions from their families.

next up: los cerritos wetlands this saturday may 7th from 10:30 to 12:30.... eat a big breakfast, wear a hat, your new blue t-shirts, closed toe shoes please, sunscreen and water. gloves to protect your hands is a great idea too.

here are some upcoming events:

Monday Feb 21st (school holiday) you can earn several beads by helping me at my community garden plot. we will be pulling weeds and planting spring plants to harvest in the summer. wear junky clothes and shoes, bring garden gloves if you have them. we will meet at 10am at the spca gate (i have a clicker to get you in, please be on time, if you come late it will be hard for us to know you are outside the gate). tell the parking lot booth attendant you are meeting someone at the community garden and they will let you drive back (left turn into the spca road) drop off is fine, pick up at 11:30am. we will harvest in the summer.

Monday Feb 28th Emily/Lily host a solar system meeting at the church 630-730pm
we will be silkscreening wetlands t-shirts. please bring 1 or 2 blue shirts (not too light, we will be using white paint) these can be worn at upcoming wetland events!!

Monday March 7th Delaney's meeting

Friday March 11th Ice cream social at the Armory to celebrate Camp Fire's 102 birthday. 6:30 to 8:30pm. All ice cream and supplies will be provided, just show up. There will be a trivia type game that parents must participate in so please sit with your child when the trivia game is announced. We will be earning our Camp Fire birthday patch, if you attend this event you will earn 3 of the 4 requirements by attending this event. wear your vest to school one day in the month of march and you will earn the patch. i will hand out the requirements list for you to check off and return to me. you can choose 4 items on the list of your choice if you miss the ice cream social.

Sunday March 13 Meet and Greet at Grace First church. two time slots 8:45- 9:15 (shake hands with members prior to 9am service then leave) and 10:00- 11:20 (help serve refreshments then shake hands prior to the 11am service then leave). Meet at the entrance to the church fellowship hall IN UNIFORM PLEASE, nice and neat to greet the fellowship members. no real change from the last few years we have done this event. we need a lot of people so please try and attend.

Jan 10th Monday: Collar workshop 6:30p at the church, bring 25 dollar deposit so we can order the leather for your collar. We will go over the color chart and talk about collar design. A parent is encouraged to stay and help at this meeting so each girl gets the attention needed to feel good about their chosen design.

Jan 11th Tuesday Candy Sale kickoff event at the Amory 2200 Redondo Ave, Long Beach start time approx 6pm, potluck dinner, each person to bring one item to donate. we will have sign up sheets for the sell locations, the kids will be separate from adults so we can have a mini parent meeting.

This Saturday, Dec 4 is the Belmont Shore Parade

please wear dark pants, white turtleneck or sweatshirt under your vest or red hoodie under the vest.

i have santa hats but if you have your own, please bring it so we make sure there are enough for everyone.

bring jingle bells to shake or anything christmas and festive to jazz us up a bit.

Meet on Quincy street (same as every year) to line up no later than 6:30 pm, parade starts at 7pm. Bring your permission slip if you were given one at the last meeting. Make sure you use the restroom prior to lining up, there are always long lines at the bathrooms. Be sure to eat dinner so you can make it all the way around the parade loop.

Parents pick up at the island where the parade comes to an end (please walk to meet us as soon as you see us pass by)

Coming up, a few events to attend:

Friday and Saturday, July 9th and 10th "Acoustic Tidal Artwalk" at the Colorado Lagoon. I am in charge of hosting an arts/crafts/games table/booth area and need my Camp Fire kids to help out. Soon I will have all the details, but if you can volunteer for this event let me know. ++++update+++++ Start time is 6pm to 10pm, we will be hosting a craft table and game area. Our location will be near the playground at the lagoon. Wear your camp fire uniform, I am working on making special t-shirts for the event. You will get one if you come help out.

It is held at the Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach, last year it was in the late afternoon/evening, official times for this year are not out yet. It is a fun celebration at the beach with displays of art/photos that are influenced by our beaches and wetlands. There will be food, music, activities for the kids, a lovely location. We enjoyed ourselves so much last year, looking forward to being a part of the festivities this year. This is a great way for our camp fire kids to get out in the public showing support for our local wetlands.

July 31st Saturday
the 100 years of Camp Fire Celebration!!! This event will be starting in the afternoon (around 4pm) and we are signed up to help, more details to come, my first choice for us was to help with singing and serenading. Please mark your calendars for this event and tell all your friends and families to come. this is a National event and we will earn beads and possibly a special patch for helping out. 100 year celebrations don't come around every day!! ******update****** we will be serenading on the patio outside the lodge.

Camp Shiwaka August 9 through 13 (day camp meeting to be announced, probably Sat or Sun August 7/8)
this year we will be earning an outdoor progression patch and i have some interesting crafts lined up! Can't wait! On thursday, we will be meeting early to have a special nature walk together (bring a sack lunch) i will post the time when we get closer to camp.

A few dates to put on your calendar for next year: the Benefit Auction Saturday September 25th, our group will be donating a basket. All groups are invited to attend the dinner and help support Camp Fire. If you are looking for ways to help support Camp Fire in Long Beach, this dinner would be a great way. Camp Fire is always struggling financially, so this might be something your family is interested in attending. It is held at the Long Beach Hilton.

We will continue having meetings run by you guys and we are starting a new idea called "Alumni Events" The first alumni event will be the TPL concert in October, we will have a Progressive dinner in december and invite all alumnis to our spring camp out. I hope to start a tradition of having a Beach Bonfire Potluck during the summer and include all of our former Camp Fire friends and families. I am sure everyone misses our camp fire friends who could not continue with our group. Camp Shiwaka registration due BEFORE this friday june 4th, i will be at the council friday morning to register our group.

I have a large batch of orange beads, just in, let me know if you want to come help me at my garden plot at the community garden over the summer to earn orange beads. check your "vintage" camp fire books (i still have a few xerox copies of the orange bead section) and let me know if you have earned some on your own. we will continue to earn vintage beads next year so if you haven't picked up a vintage camp fire book yet (cheap on ebay) it would be a good idea to get one over the summer. also, the symbol book will also be used over the next few years if you want to pick one up as well. let me know if you have any questions about earning beads or have creative ideas we can do as a group (one idea is to have a father/daughter cake baking contest... love that one!!)

Grand Council Fire

Thank you for a wonderful evening, that was the best and most organized GCF i have ever seen. I hope everyone is inspired by the Wo He Lo recipients. You can see how few kids actually earn it, it is the highest honor in Camp Fire. It usually takes a few years to put together (one large service project with many components) and is done at the Horizon level. Not earning mine is something I have always regretted, although I think running two groups right now should earn me one (ha ha!)

This Sunday is Grand Council Fire, wear uniform, bring sit upons and flash light. Ceremony starts at 7pm, drop off kids at the Shiwaka flagpole between 6 and 6:30pm. Please donate a package of cookies at the council kitchen on your way in.

You will be sitting behind us, there will be a point in the ceremony where parents will come up and pin the wood gatherer's pin on your daughter's vest. After the ceremony, we will stay together as a group and meet parents back at the lodge. Please don't rush and grab your kid when we are dismissed from the ceremony. It is very chaotic and we want the girls to stay together and walk back to the lodge for dessert.

TPL and the wetlands

April 17 was a double whammy camp fire day! we had our first ever "east side neighborhood" los cerritos wetlands event (the second one will be May 1st 10am to noon, Los Cerritos Wetlands, meet at trader joe's parking lot in the market place)

There were about 30 or 40 camp fire families there, with another 30 or 40 volunteers from around the city to help pull weeds and take a tour of Los Cerritos Wetlands. i heard many people tell me they couldn't believe all this amazing space we have right here in the city, so much that can be saved. it was very inspiring to hear!!

then, at 5pm we had our pizza and concert with The Potential Lunatics!! a total smashing success! this was a great way to celebrate our end of the year and reward for candy sales, thanks so much to everyone who came out! there were 7 groups invited and we had a nice mix of parents and kids. thank you to the Potential Lunatics and we are hoping to plan another concert soon! Highlights for me were AMBER getting up and singing and playing guitar to a song she wrote (she also went up and did another song with emma) and when a huge chunk of the audience came up and sang with emma! I really loved how emma chose to sing a camp fire song that reminded her of a time when her older sisters were in camp fire and sang to her, i saw many kids singling along with her. it was a great concert!!

The Potential Lunatics will be playing at the Aquarium of the Pacific on May 1st at 3pm, let me know if you want a flyer. our family will be attending the los cerritos wetlands restoration at 10 am May 1st and then seeing the concert at 3pm (much like april 17!!). hope some of you who missed out april 17 can see them there.

spring camp out is may 14 and the pancake breakfast is may 15th. (check your camp fire calendar, it is written wrong) 50 dollars due by the pancake breakfast or bring a check to me anytime.

I have decided to allow two Los Cerritos Wetlands events to count, this Friday March 19th is a vigil at Loynes and Studebaker at 6:30pm which will count for one event if you choose to attend. (Saturdays April 17 and May 1st available, please rsvp)

April 17th Potential Lunatics party

May 2nd is Grand Council Fire, you must attend two wetlands events before grand council fire to earn the Wood Gatherer award. Handouts for this event will be given at the next meeting.

May 7th/8th Spring Campout and pancake breakfast
tickets for the pancake breakfast have been handed out. money is due by the day of the breakfast. this year we will be responsible for the full amount, we are hoping to have zero cost for food at day camp so unfortunately the pancake breakfast cost falls on all of us. come out and enjoy the sleepover and eat as much pancakes as you can to make the 50 dollars worth it! remember this is a super fun event for the kids, they LOVE it!! I will have a tent set up for spring camp out, please let me know if you want to sleep out with your family, we need at least two more tents for our large group. this is a great opportunity for families to enjoy camp shiwaka too!!!

candy sales are done! whew! this felt like a really long drawn out candy sales for me, i think having two kids selling is a big part of that. we made it through and we will be getting a nice check to add to our camp fire account which still have a pretty good balance. i will be ordering bead looms for us soon, so we can all start learning how to bead bracelets and headbands. we can take our bead looms to daycamp and work on projects there as well.

camp shiwaka will be august session 3 from august 9 to august 13. i will be there the entire week with the kinder group and can spend time with both groups. this works best for me because i will only be taking off one week instead of two. we will have a daycamp meeting when we get closer to the end of the school year. we will be earning a special patch/award that week as well. lets make day camp super cushy this year, if you have old blankets, pillows etc that are ready for the garbage, hold on to them for camp this year. we want to make a really cool hang out to relax in this year.

next meeting is feb 22 at danica's house, new address will be available soon. we will be having a new member join our group sophia shroeder, if you know her at school, be sure and welcome her to our group. she will need a few buddies to help her learn about camp fire, let me know if you would like to help with this.

pinewood derby has been postponed and may not happen this year, let me know if you are interested so i can keep you posted.

march 20 cake auction neighborhood event, 6:30pm at the camp fire counci (this is NEW UPDATED INFO) each child will bring a cake (homemade or bought, preferably homemade) with whatever crazy decorations you can come up with. the cakes will all be displayed and then auctioned off to the highest bidder. there will be awards given in several categories. it would be a great event to take grandparents to or anyone who would enjoy purchasing a cake from you, your camp fire group or to help support camp fire. i will post more info as i get it. if you have two kids in camp fire, you only need to bring one cake.

Riverbed cleanups

Save our Beach has teamed up with Los Cerritos Wetlands, they have trash clean ups at the beach and around the wetlands. They are also involved in the disneyland ticket give away for volunteering. These events will fulfill the requirement for our service projects (remember you need two, the colorado lagoon plus the los cerritos weltands) so if these work for you, feel free to attend.

i can't believe i didn't take a single picture at the art workshop today, not one!!! i had to snap a couple on our way home in the car...dang!!! it was really fun and i am so proud of all of you guys, you really did well listening and doing the assignment. i hope we can continue working on more drawing and painting in upcoming meetings.

I am so excited that this is Camp Fire's 100th year Birthday!! I am hoping to do several projects that reflect this special year, stay tuned for that. I am canceling the next meeting Jan 4th, Jessica will be hosting a meeting in the spring on a Saturday. We will do a walk around the Nature Center (to fulfill a requirement for our special outdoor progression patch) and visit the SPCA. I have to work on the 4th so it worked out better just to cancel it.

Candy Sales are fast approaching, January and February will be chock full of store sales, so be ready! Our goal this year is for everyone to EASILY selling their minimum and of course you are welcome to sell more. Emily is striving to keep in the 120 club, a goal that i would love to see everyone accomplish. Remember, the Long Beach council gets 100 percent of the profits we generate and we will get a nice bonus check if we sell a lot. LASTLY, there is one group that is very competitive and i would LOVE to give them a run for their money. last year they really smeared everyone that first weekend of sales, so if you are interested in setting up a strategy to really knock our sales out of the park that first weekend, let me know. i will post more details on specific dates for January events soon. i would love to hear from you if you want to be more aggressive with candy sales this year. i think we can do it!

upcoming info on the Yule Ball this Saturday: this is the letter i received from Cecille (Emma and Isaac's mom)

The Yule Ball Celebration is a secular, holiday event/ toy drive for the Long Beach Women's Shelter, the homeless and underserved kids in Long Beach. This is the second time we will have participated in this event. We also attend church there. It's held in the Parish Hall@ St. Luke's Episcopal Church. There will be free food and games and crafts. Isaac and Emma are also in a homeschool jazz/rock group with 9 other kids. That group will also have a short performance there that evening. They are really good too.
It's a fun evening. Last year we decorated with paper snowflakes hanging from the ceiling and lighted trees and lit candles. It was really pretty. It's inspired by the scene in Harry Potter at their Yule Ball with the open ceiling and the snow coming in. It had that magical feel.

The info is: Dec12, 6-9 pm. St. Luke's Episcopal Church in the Parish Hall, 525 E. 7th St., Long Beach 90813 It's a big, beautiful 100 year old church. Parking is in the back and on the side of the church.

We 're asking people to donate an unwrapped toy for a boy or girl. Or a Target gift card for $10 or more. The cards will be used to get the toys for whatever age group or sex needs to be filled in after all the donations are in. Last year, (through The Yule Ball and boxes placed around the community) we collected 200 toys and there were still kids that had to be turned away.

It's a wonderful church that does many good things for the community. Amount the many programs that they have is a shower and food program for the homeless all year. They always need new or old, in good condition, men's clothes, in particular. So if your husbands or fathers are cleaning out their closets, or shopping and you can buy an extra bag of socks or underwear, please think of this program.

Wear dark pants, white sweatshirt, turtleneck, sweater etc under your vest. Uniforms are mandatory.
I have a bag of santa hats, if you have one already, please bring it, extras are always good.

Everyone must sign a permission slip, anne marie and susie are in charge so make sure you touch base with them early. We need to hand them in that night (anne has the forms).

remember it is crowded so get there early. Remember to eat dinner but don't fill up on too much drink and USE THE RESTROOM before lining up. the bathroom facilities are not convenient.

So I told the girls about our neighbor Lynn who donated her belongings to our recent last minute garage sale to benefit our group... earning our camp fire group 300 dollars!! this is money put in to our kitty for beads, patches, supplies and fun events!!

The girls need to write thank you letters to her and bring the letters to our next meeting. i would love to get her some flowers and a stack of thank you cards asap, so please remember to bring them next meeting.

i am handing out beads as we earn them this year (if possible), only about half the girls received beads tonight because we ran out (everyone got the red white and blue citizenship bead in a plastic baggie though so make sure you check your canvas bag for it, don't lose it!!) jill hamilton picked up some beads for us so i will have them at the next meeting to get everyone caught up.

vintage beads: if you can purchase the vintage camp fire girl book (here is an example on ebay) please do, i also have some copies of the orange, light blue and red/white/blue bead list the girls can earn, let me know and i will give you a copy. thank you janet for making copies at your work for us. remember: you can earn beads on your own, all year long, at your own pace. just check out the bead book and have fun with the vintage beads too! you can also purchase vintage beads on ebay and earn them as well.

Next week we will have a special guest and work on our kiniya poster. please bring a thank you card for LYNN and your workbooks. all girls need to have an individual indian name, if you didnt pick one tonight or have one already, please purchase an indian name book at camp fire and spend some time picking a name (we have a few copies we can share as well).

please purchase a "symbol book" in the next few months, we will need it as we work more on indian themed projects. next up is the symbolgrams for our group name and individual name. once we choose the symbols we can start making felt designs on our vests and future gowns. we will also be learning how to use a bead loom and make headbands and bracelets with our symbolgrams. this will be super fun (i still have my headband from when i was a kid!!! ) more on this later. pick up the symbol book if you are at the council, its about 8 or 9 dollars (they are ordering more, there were only a few copies left the other day)

bead fair is this wednesday, starts promptly at 930am, i am running it so i can use all the parent volunteer help possible. we should be done at 1230, you can stay and have a sack lunch at the end but i am opting to leave when the event is over. let me know though, i dont mind staying. if you can volunteer, i will place you at a booth to help the coordinator and/or have you take our girls around to different stations. it's a super fun event!

let me know if you need a calendar for the los cerritos wetlands and friends of the colorado lagoon events. many of the girls said they didn't know anything about this at tonights meeting. remember i have posted links here to the calendar on the los cerritos wetlands stewards site.

Saving Los Cerritos Wetlands

We spent a wonderful morning out on the Los Cerritos Wetlands today! Thank you Fatima, Ella, Ava, Emily and Lizzie for giving up your Saturday morning to help clean up and restore a beautiful oasis in our city. Can't wait to hear how all of you feel about the wetlands after spending time with Taylor, Eric and the other naturalists who run the restoration events.

November and beyond

Next meeting we will be getting ready for Kiniya. Our service project this year is to help restore Los Cerritos Wetlands and we added the Colorado Lagoon to our wetlands list as well.

This Saturday (nov 7th) I will be attending the habitat restoration at 10 am to noon at Los Cerritos Wetlands. If you would like to join me, i have space for one more kid and you are also welcome to drop off at the wetlands and pick up around noon. I have only attended a trash pickup in the past but i assume it will be a bit messy, so wear clothes that can get dirty, closed toed shoes, hats, sunscreen, garden gloves are good if you have them. Let me know if you can come. This will fulfill 1/2 of the service project needed to earn the Wood Gatherers Patch.

Bead Fair!! Vets day, November 11th, $5 dollars per girl, starts at 9:30am to noonish. Please wear your uniform, we take lots of pictures that day for the council. We could use as many parent volunteers as possible, don't worry if you can only drop off. this is a great way for the girls to earn 7 beads all in one day and have fun with the entire group. let me know if you can help out that day at one of the booths.

November 16th meeting: a professional makeup artist will be showing us how to do different kinds of make up (she works in hollywood and is an artist as well) This will be a fun meeting! She will be doing temporary makeup tattoos, be sure and let me know if you dont want your child to get one. they last longer than your normal temp tattoos. :)

Kiniya: thursday November 19th. Meet at the flagpole at 5:30pm, drop off camp fire kids and then family heads to the amphitheater at the back of camp shiwaka. bring sit upon, flashlight, wear your uniform. Two girls will go up and read our scroll about our service project and put it in Santas bag. Please bring one package of cookies (drop these off on your way to the flagpole at the council) these will be served after the ceremony at the lodge. Bring the lyrics to the Dreidel song if you have them.

At the Parent meeting we discussed the Art Workshop we will be attending Saturday Jan 9th, please mark your calendars. It will be in the afternoon (time to be announced) and held at Summer Studios in Torrance. Cost is approx 15 dollars/girl, we will subsidize with money from our kitty if possible. The girls will earn at least one bead (most likely a few) for this event and i will expand on this lesson in future meetings. They will be learning to color mix and paint a painting while being instructed by David Parsons, the owner of the studio and a professor at several colleges. I hope we can all do this together! Older siblings may also come (let me know ahead of time) There is room for 15 to 20 kids.

Belmont Shore parade is coming up, there may be some changes in the time and location (where we meet) so stay tuned for more on that soon. It is the first Saturday of December. If you have a Santa hat, please bring it that night. Dress warmly, white turtleneck or sweatshirt under your blue vest, dark pants, shoes you can walk in.

Neighborhood Associations

Our first Neighborhood Association get together will be Wednesday October 28th, 6:30pm to 8pm held at Grace First Church, fellowship hall.

"Game Night" is the activity, a dessert bar will be set up for us. Please bring one dessert item (cookies, brownies or other easily held, not too messy items) to share with everyone.

There will be a communal game of Bunko (sp???sorry!!) with kids rotating through stations, parents are welcome to play, siblings and friends welcome. This is a fun event only, just enjoy yourselves!!

Our Neighborhood Association is designed to help bring our local groups together. It will be great to know members of other camp fire groups, especially those who live close to us. I am working on spreading the word to other leaders about attending the wetlands cleanups with us, more kids = more fun for us!!

Let me know if you can attend this event, i need a head count soon.

up coming events, volunteers needed

we need a volunteer parent to sign us up for the halloween carnival at the council (saturday oct 10 is the deadline) the same parent needs to make a sign up sheet for the kids to sign up for one hour shifts from 4pm to 7pm and pass it around at the next meeting.

the booth this year will be a "cupcake walk" we need something to play music on, music, halloween decorations and parents who can help at the booth with the kids. i will be there the entire time, but i will have my new group attending as well (we wont have a booth but i need to supervise a bit) any and all suggestions are welcome!

christmas party: is there anyone interested in hosting the christmas party if dori is unavailable? it would be either the first or second december monday meeting.

our kiniya project is the wetlands, jessica sutter is currently the service project chair if anyone has any other service projects they would like to schedule and run in the near future (for us all to attend) please contact her. we have been hoping for an spca visit if anyone has a connection!!

Los Cerritos Wetlands Stewardship and Friends of the Colorado Lagoon

Please attend one event from each of the above groups to fulfill the service project requirement for the Wood Gatherer Award. You may attend any event you would like, Habitat Restoration, Trash Clean up, Bird Walk, Estuary Exploration. Feel free to invite your friends and family to these as well. We will share about these grouops with all of Camp Fire at Kiniya on November 19th, so please complete both before then (bottom line deadline is December 19th).

Dates are listed on the flyers handed out at the first meeting, i have plenty of copies if you need them.

Good Neighbor Festival: stop by if you can between 10am and 3pm to visit our table and help out (good neighbor park near the el dorado library). We will be making buttons with my button machine. There will be a chalk art contest that sounds pretty interesting to me, so come if you can.

Cubberley Recruitment Night: I will be at Keller on wednesday Sept 30th, so come by the cafe at Cubberley if you want to help Stacey's group pass out info and talk with interested parents. We are starting a new Kindergarten group at Cubberley this year and need new members, maybe you know a friend with a kinder kid who wants to join? Let me know.

meetings will remain at the church and continue at 5pm

bring your filled out "officer" form and your choice for a future meeting (there were three pages of those) you can also choose something you want to do that is not on the list if you describe it to me and we can figure out a bead for it. (for example: you have a chicken for a pet, we could visit your pet and you could teach us about it)

the "outdoor progression" is a special patch we will be earning this year. put the handout of the requirements in your new workbook. we will go over it together at the next meeting.

dues for the year will be 60 dollars, please bring to the next meeting. this will cover entry fees to camp fire events, craft supplies and beads/patches and awards. at each meeting we will collect whatever change you can bring and put it toward a fun event at the end of the year. the treasurer will keep track of it for us.

make sure all the info on our new roster is correct and complete

two recruitment events: this saturday (26th) is the good neighbor festival (at the good neighbor park adjacent to el dorado library) we will be hosting a table. i will be there from about 9am to 3pm and could really use the company (event starts at 10am). if you can stop by for even 30 minutes i would really appreciate it! there will be booths for the girls to go to so it will be fun too. siblings and friends welcome to this event.
Wednesday Sept 30th (i believe it will be at 6pm, but might be 7pm... will follow up on that) at Cubberley in the cafeteria, just like the last few years, is the camp fire recruitment night. the girls can come and visit with any new kids that stop by and the parents can chat with us. if you can stop by for just a few minutes to show your support, i would really appreciate it. everyone is welcome (siblings, friends, family...)

bring your workbook in a folder next week, we will go over it together. make sure you keep the yearly calendar in a safe place so you know what is coming up next.

Big news guys! the first ever los cerritos wetlands clean up/restoration is this saturday, sept 19th from 1pm to 3pm. if you can make it, please try to come, it will be an awesome experience for all of us who have hoped to restore this fantastic area. info is on the los cerritos wetlands facebook page or you can contact me for directions. info here as well.

This year our group will continue to support the restoration (and acquisition of even more of the wetlands) and this event will be the first of many.

first meeting of the year: monday sept 21st 5pm at the church

parents please join us for a combined parent/info meeting.

we will be implementing a new system of officers (president, vp, secretary etc) for the girls to sign up for. these new officers will change the beginning of our meeting to a more "business like" environment. the girls will be given more responsibility in running the group. i am so looking forward to watching the girls in their new roles, they are sooooo ready!

we will also be assigning a lesson to each girl who will then run a future meeting (including the organizing of lesson, craft and snack). i will give out the choices at the first meeting so it is important to be there, if you cannot make it, you will have to pick what is left over (they are all fun, so dont worry!) each activity will have 1 to 3 beads earned, some are more time consuming than others so it is not a competition. the meeting dates are already assigned to each girl, the official calendar for the year will be handed out at the first meeting, giving plenty of planning time. you can host the meeting anywhere, at your house, the church or a special location. it is up to each girl to decide. there are plenty of choices to choose from, lots of variety. this is JUST FOR FUN too, not like an oral report to earn a grade.

also, the council auction is sept 26th and we need to donate an item. i am working on something (maybe a quilt or pillows) so i may need to get you guys over to my house the weekend of the 12th or 13th for some quick artwork. i will send out an email if i need to do this, otherwise i will see you all on the 21st.

thank you thank you bear cubs (loving bears!!) you made this rummage sale a success! did you know we earned more than 1100 dollars in sales?? 140 dollars in t shirt sales and more than 50 dollars in donations?? thanks to you guys and your awesome selling of crafty items, lemonade and baked goods. you should be soooo proud!! plus your moms rocked the selling of all those donated goods, thank you thank you!!

day camp meeting, rummage sale

day camp meeting June 15th at the church. this meeting starts at 5pm and may run a bit past 6pm, lots to do!

bring a t shirt, we will be painting on them with a "lost in space" theme

please choose your indian name and have it ready for day camp, we will be talking about our indian names that week. this year at day camp we get to chop wood and light fires, entering 4th grade (wow the girls are growing up fast!)

we will be planning our menu at the day camp meeting. monday (first day of camp) bring a sack lunch, we cook lunch tues, wed and dinner saturday, breakfast is cooked friday.

the wetlands rummage sale is june 20th and i need as many kids and parent volunteers who can make it. we will be hosting a craft table making friendship bracelets and selling homemade crafts. if you cant make it to the sale, please make something to sell and donate. you can paint rocks, make magnets, bookmarks, paint pictures, make friendship bracelets or anything you would like to donate for us to sell. get creative! please donate rummage sale items (clothes, toys, books etc) as well. bring items directly to the sale or drop off at my house.

the sale runs from 7am to noon and you can come the entire time or for an hour or two, kids can just be dropped of if parents are busy. please wear your vest or red jackets, we want people to see camp fire kids out in the community. there is a high probability several newspapers will be there taking photos, so look your best and come support the restoration of the wetlands! kathleen and isabella will be there, so come see them!

duck patrol

thank you to everyone who came to our duck patrol, this was a nice change from the last one! we found no one was feeding the ducks and were more positive toward us. what a relief! periodically we will meet at the duck pond for duck patrols, this will be ongoing next year as well. we can also meet at the colorado lagoon, a beautiful oasis in the city! see everyone after the holiday!

next meeting is monday June 1st, please look over the indian name worksheets i gave you and/or get an indian name book from the council. we will choose our new indian group name and our own individual names!!

we are hosting a bake sale table and an art/craft kid table at the upcoming, just announced Los Cerritos Wetlands Rummage sale on Saturday June 20th being held at the Gaslamp restaurant on Loynes and PCH. We will need to supply lots and lots of home baked goodies so get ready for some baking, please mark your calendar and get more junk out of the closets. we can host a camp fire "junk" table as well. i have bags and bags of stuff, just need a volunteer to run it. let me know if you can help!

June 7th beach bbq at bolsa chica, 3pm, dori and i will be working on this, let me know if you are coming so we can coordinate the fire ring number we will be at and wood (does anyone have some to donate?) bring your own dinner!

June 13th 8am, Mary has invited us to a bird walk at gum grove park, this is a last minute add on to the schedule, i am going to try and make it. let me know if you can go, gum grove park is in the "Heron Pointe" housing tract in seal beach off seal beach blvd, across from the naval station. next year we will meet there for at least one meeting, you can see Los Cerritos Wetlands on this walk!

Summer: we are officially off after day camp but i will be continuing my work with the wetlands group so periodically i will send out emails if i need girls for events. i also would LOVE to have a painting type class where i can teach drawing and painting in more depth. let me know if you are interested, i can plan it and send out a list of materials needed (for example a sketch pad and canvas board). i will be doing this with emily and more kids would make it fun.

we made 74.25 at the garage sale last weekend. thank you linda for signing us up for that and staying the whole time! this is an easy way for us to make money so lets try for another bigger garage sale next year. the money will go toward day camp food.

we graduated from Trail Seeker to Wood Gatherer! thanks to everyone who came tonight, it was fun and i am so proud of the girls who were the fire lighters, trail seekers and then fire extinguishers. good job girls!! our first grand council fire!

game warden

great turn out tonight guys! hope everyone enjoyed meeting the game warden and autographing the pillow cases. bring your pillow case to camp shiwaka!!

i will see everyone 6pm on sunday for grand council fire. we will run through the fire lighting and fire extinguishing ceremony prior to the ceremony, please be on time. bring a sit upon, adults need a blanket or beach chair as well. make sure you have eaten before you come and please no toys, food, cell phones, games etc at this event. this is the formal end of year, all council ceremonial. everyone will be receiving a bag of patches and awards. parents will be coming forward when the "trail seeker" pledge is announced to place a ribbon with the trail seeker pin on it over your own childs head. this is the highest honor we can earn for our 3rd grade adventure level. this is similar to the "flying up" we did in the winging ceremony.

the garage sale is this saturday at 730am, please drop off your items at the church (willow and palo verde) and if you cant make it on saturday, drop it off at my house friday. i will be taking a truckload of items over saturday morning. any girls who can help us sell would be greatly appreciated. linda will be alone the first two hours (i am sending chris to help) and i will join her at about 930am. i am hoping we can make some money to help offset the daycamp costs, please donate and get your closets cleaned out!

monday is the mother daughter tea meeting, bring a cardboard photo box and pictures to decorate it. this will be a fun and very relaxed meeting.

we went over the calendar (which was handed out at last meeting and mirrors the blog post april-june)

starting in May, we will start our meetings at 5pm and see how it works out. please let me know if you need me to pick up your child if you have a conflict with time, i would be more than happy to pick up and drop off kids (i can easily take 3 each monday)

this saturday is the camp clean up, not many (if any) people can go, please try if you can, even for an hour. i am doing my best to get there myself. (i believe it is 830 to 1230 with a free lunch after)

for the mother daughter tea meeting (first meeting in may) please bring a cardboard photo box and camp fire pictures to decorate the box. mothers and daughters will work together on this project. if you dont have many pictures, please go to either of my blogs and drag/drop directly from the blog and/or go to my flickr account and look at the camp fire bluebirds folder. you can "steal" pictures by dragging and dropping them on to your desktop, then use iphoto (or similar photo program) to print them out. let me know if you need help with this, i can send pictures to a few of you but dont have time to do everyone. there should be quite a lot to choose from.

spring camp out: kim and i will be sleeping over with one large tent (i have two small tents as well that can hold 2 to 3 girls each) so we can have a pretty large crowd staying over. we didnt figure out dinner yet, but kim and i will work on that. you can come for dinner only (2 dollars and stay for the ceremony) or sleep over (5 dollars) you pay on your way in. set up starts at 4pm, chris will be there early to set up tents and dinner should be around 6pm. pancake breakfast is in the morning, please come and eat your 40 dollars worth of pancakes!!!

grand council fire: formal event, uniforms (white only under vests, turtlenecks and polo shirt), sit upons and flashlights. we will be doing the lighting and extinguishing of the fire, very exciting! we need to arrive at 6pm, ceremony starts at 7pm (not sure why we need to be there an hour early, i will look in to this) grandparents are welcome to this event. parents may want to bring a blanket to sit on and/or small chairs. there may be seating on the lower levels??? this is our first time to this event.

garage sale may 2nd. (i forgot to mention this last night) please bring items directly to the garage sale on the morning of may 2nd at the church (palo verde and willow, white gondola and teddy bear sign) if you can't make it that morning but have some items, you can drop them off with me at my house prior to saturday. the money we earn from this will be put into our kitty for day camp food. this is a GREAT way for our girls to earn some money and i would love to have a few girls help out that day. the sale starts at 730 am and the girls can work a one hour shift or stay as long as they would like. linda and i will be there, i have a conflict until 930am so any parent volunteer who can come at 730 to help linda would be greatly appreciated.

We will be having a garage sale on may 2 at the church sage goes to. 90 percent of our earnings will go in our kitty to help with day camp costs. Please gather things to donate and help clean out your closets :)

Linda and I will run our "booth" but anyone who wants to help, we won't say no to ya! Haha!!

I am finalizing the calendar and will be posting updates here. Tomorrow, April 6th meeting, i will hand out copies to take home, please make sure you pick one up.

I want to tell everyone that Kim Albin will be helping me as another co-leader along with Christine. There has been so much this year with all the new things, beads, trails and having lost Kathleen over the summer. I have been really overwhelmed and needing help (and not admitting it!!) so i am telling everyone now, i am so happy to have her on board to go over the schedule, give me ideas, help me organize our group. We have discussed many things and i think everyone will benefit from our new approach.

For one: we will try making the first Monday of every month a mandatory meeting. It will be important for us to have all the kids at one meeting monthly so we can hand out calendars, give out information, do a project that will be supporting our "trail patch" and make sure everyone is on track. This year i have had difficulty keeping track of everyone and it has a lot to do with the poor attendance of meetings and unorganized meetings (thank you if you havent noticed, but i have been!) i can't expect everyone to come to meetings if i am not organized myself. from now until the end of the year, we will have meetings every monday except for holidays (including spring break).

Parent meeting will be Monday April 20th, no kids please, bring your camp shiwaka paperwork if you have it ready. i will go over the beads (and how you earn them, record them and buy them) the trails we are working on each year, grand council fire info, spring camp out and pancake breakfast and daycamp.

Saturday April 25th is a mandatory camp clean up, we need as many people as possible to attend this from our group. I plan on going, i know many of you have sports on saturday, so just do your best. its from 8:30 am to 12:30 am and they will serve a free lunch after. we will be cleaning up camp for grand council fire and camp shiwaka, it will be a true "work party" so wear your junky clothes.

Monday April 27th meeting with the Potter group at the church, a biologist will be coming to talk with the kids! should be fun! this will fulfill a requirement for our trail patch.

Sunday May 3rd is Grand Council Fire 6pm (we have graduated out of Winging Ceremony) the girls will be receiving their trail seeker patch and pin, beads and awards. it is a big year end celebration and very important. grandparents and siblings are welcome, it is a longer event than usual though. the girls are expected to be in uniform and speaking of uniforms:

it has come to my attention that the girls need to wear their white polo camp fire shirt under their vests at all times. i guess we have been pretty slack on this, i personally have been extremely slack and it has been noticed by the council. especially when we attend public events such as the flag salute, meet and greet and at candy sales. please make sure you purchase at least one camp fire shirt and i recommend everyone buy a red hoodie if you can. the hoodies are really easy to wear to camp fire events and will serve as a uniform for the more casual things we go to. they are also good for day camp and camp wintaka. if you dont have a camp fire polo, PLEASE use a white uniform polo the girls wear to school. make an effort to put the white shirt under the vest instead of their regular clothes. if we all try, i am sure we will do better at it. thanks!!

May 4th Mother Daughter Tea meeting!! Bring a plain cardboard photo box (the kind you store photos in, like a shoe box) and any camp fire photos you have. we will be decorating the box as a craft, mothers and daughters together. there will be fancy treats to eat, we are celebrating mothers day together. this is a mandatory meeting.

May 11th tentatively: science meeting with christine and the finalizing of our groups camp name (come if you want to help us pick our name!! this will be the name we keep forever!)

May 15th Spring Camp out and saturday morning is pancake breakfast. Kim and I will be sleeping over, Janet may if she can. Anyone else interested?? You can bring a tent! We will discuss this more at the parent meeting. There is a charge for this event, one price for those who just eat dinner and one price for those who sleep over.

May 18th meeting: duck patrol at el dorado duck pond. we will gather to spread friendly info booklets out to people at the pond and do a quick litter clean up. i need a parent to bring plastic bags to share with everyone that day. we will have a special snack and play on the playground together. this will help fulfill a requirement for our trail seeker patch.

May 25th no meeting

i am working hard on the april-june calendar, lots of fun stuff coming up! there will be a father daughter dinner in may, spring camp out and day camp (second session this year!) so get your calendars ready!

Los Cerritos Wetland update: yes our long lost service project is up and running... lots of exciting buzz going on. you can check out our new facebook page (please join if you can) and there are rallies every friday from 5 to 7pm. i am hoping we can set up a table at an upcoming rally with buttons and maybe posters to hand out to the supporters. the Los Cerritos Wetlands land trust is excited to see kids and young people at the rallies, last week was fun so come if you can!

every friday, 5-7pm loynes and studebaker, park in the "hole" the housing tract on loynes and walk to the demonstration area (not hard to miss). wear your wetlands t shirt and make a sign to support the wetlands!

camp shiwaka, camp wintaka

we will be attending session 2 of camp shiwaka this summer, June 22-26

i signed emily up to reserve our spot so you can start signing up asap.

camp wintaka is july 20-25, last year emily, danica and margaret went. isabella is hoping to go this year to keep in touch with all her cubberley friends. you can pay a 100 dollar deposit with the balance due june 1st (this is what i will be doing) also, there is a lot of money sitting in a campership fund that is specific to camp wintaka. many alumni donate money for kids to go to sleep away camp because they know how important it is so please fill out a form if you think it will be hard for you to pay. i am going to look into it myself, this has been a hard year for everyone. dont let finances hold you back if your daughter wants to go. last year much of the money wasnt used and last minute calls were made out for kids to go free! if your paperwork is in, there is a good chance camp fire can help you. look at it this way: they need a full camp to keep it open, they need lots of kids to go so you are HELPING the council if you use the campership money, rather than keeping your child home when they want to go. does that make sense? just fill it out soon, not last minute please.

i sent home the 99 year birthday patch requirements to the girls who came last night, check their bags if you want to double check the requirements. i will be ordering the patches after the ice cream social on sunday march 29th, its a one time only patch so fill out the form and turn it in to me so i can make sure your daughter gets the patch and the purple bead. the girls are excited for this new color bead! (i have more forms, you can get them at the next meeting as well)

we are working on our "trail seeker" emblem for the next two months so meetings will be more structured and curriculum focused. i am still working on the best way to get everyone to earn the trail patch, the beads and the patches that correspond to the beads. i know the girls just want to have fun so i wont labor the issue. i will just post notes here for parents to keep track, if you are interested. in ADVENTURE level, we earn a patch that represents the entire year, the trail seeker patch for grade 3. the girls will need 3 beads of each color to fulfill part of this requirement. i need parents to periodically check the beads your daughter has and if you notice she is lacking a color (red, blue, yellow, brown, green) then its up to you to let me know and/or go through the bead book to make up whatever meetings were missed. at the grand council fire, the girls will be given their trail seeker patch, several emblems that correspond to the beads earned and some beads. i think they will be excited to see how much they have earned this year.

meet and greet this sunday, march 22nd at the church 845am or 10am shifts (shirley is adamant the girls are dressed appropriately, please try to clean them up and put their uniforms on as well, thanks!!) drop off cookies if you want to donate and not attend.

next meeting is going to be a "learn about camp fire's history" meeting with special guests: ME (ha ha), my mom, anne marie and her mom. jessica and amber mentioned they each know a fellow camp fire member and if they or anyone has someone who would be interested in coming and sharing with us, let me know! should be fun! this fulfills a portion of the trail seeker patch.

thanks again for all who made it out see dallas, it was "interesting" and fun! there is another author and artist coming on Jan 29th with a writing and art contest. if you are interested, check the once upon a story blog. (it starts at 3 so you would be finished with the ice-cream social)

march 29th ice cream social at the council 1-3pm. bring ice cream and toppings as you would for a potluck. let me know what you will be bringing. this fulfills a requirement for the 99th birthday patch.

camp fire birthday/candy sale award ice cream social

YUM!!! just like the candy sale kick-off, we need to potluck ice cream and toppings. i will have a sign up sheet at the next meeting (please remind me if i forget!!) we just need enough to feed our group and we will mix our stuff in with the other groups.

i need a few parents to help serve ice cream and clean up after. let me know if you can help.

this will fulfill the requirement for a "camp fire birthday celebration" for our 99 patch.

a few ideas if you cant get to the three events this month (flag salute, ice cream social, meet and greet)

1. make a camp fire poster and display it in public (school, church)

2. have a camp fire birthday party at your house and invite friends who dont attend camp fire.

i will keep adding to this list.

sorry for the confusing month of march, no meeting tonight. there is no meeting march 9th as well.

we will be together thursday march 12 for the bellflower school board meeting, flag salute. i still need a parent volunteer to pick up the cake before camp fire closes that day at 5pm and bring it to the flag salute. i can fit a few kids in my car if anyone wants me to pick their kid up, i can drop them back around 8pm.

sunday march 15 is the dallas clayton author meeting at "once upon a story" bookstore in long beach
